Oboe Reed #2 is a nice, easy to play reed that has a little bit more left on, compared to the #1 reed. So if your player is getting into the second octave, this would be a great reed to move up to from the #1. It's still easy to make a sound on this reed. Usually for players who prefer a clear, responsive reed.
Tip opening: smaller (easier blowing & slightly less mouth pressure). If your player uses slightly more lip pressure or if they feel the #2 is "too easy" and they need just a LITTLE BIT more resistance, go to Oboe Reed #3, which is the sister reed to Oboe Reed #2. That one has a bit more resistance and a bit more open tip.
This reed used to be called the "S" reed, but we do not call it that anymore. If you used to buy that reed, this is the same reed, just with a different name now. We appreciate you learning and using the new name.
We have a unique system for naming our reeds. We assign them a number based on criteria about their levels of resistance. The numbers on this chart show the percentage of resistance in the reed on the left, and the percentage of flexibility in the reed on the right.
The number essentially corresponds to how easy the reed is to blow to how easy the reed is to control. Here is some advice about how to select the best reed fit for you. Do you have a request for a specific tip opening (more closed | medium | more open)? Put that in the notes and we’ll do our best to select a tip to your specifications.
