THE reed for first year players. Easy to play & make a good sound. Oboe Reed #1 is made by a well respected oboist in Dallas with 40+ years reedmaking. String color varies-see below. Tip opening: small-med (easier blowing & slightly less mouth pressure)
This is a great reed for first year players! Easy to make a good sound, especially in the fundamental range (the first octave). When your player is moving up into the second octave, it's a great time to move up to a reed with a smidge more resistance (like the #2 or the #3).
LPT: the #1 reed sometimes runs out of stock - if so, we do have this exact same reed as a decorated character reed.

Not all reeds have the same color scheme - the string color varies from reed to reed. More about string color: some variation of a multicolor, sometimes can come out as a solid color, and sometimes solid white. The specific variegation pattern or color pattern will vary from reed to reed. We do not guarantee the specific color pattern on the thread of the reed. If there is a specific request you have for a color pattern, we recommend putting that request in the notes of your order or calling us. We do not guarantee our ability to accommodate all specific thread coloration requests.
Tip opening varies: slightly smaller to slightly medium
We have a unique system for naming our reeds. We assign them a number based on criteria about their levels of resistance. The numbers on this chart show the percentage of resistance in the reed on the left, and the percentage of flexibility in the reed on the right.
Help us help you - we do not call our reeds by the old names anymore. Please call them the new names when referring to them (Oboe Reed #1, Oboe Reed #2, etc…).
The number essentially corresponds to how easy the reed is to blow to how easy the reed is to control. Here is some advice about how to select the best reed fit for you. Do you have a request for a specific tip opening (more closed | medium | more open)? Put that in the notes and we’ll do our best to select a tip to your specifications.
